Mentoring Student Affairs Grads

Posted by Ed Cabellon on 02 Nov 2010 / 25 Comments

I have always enjoyed mentoring Student Affairs graduate students.   After all,  since my own experience at Central Connecticut State University was instrumental in my professional development, it only made sense to pay it forward whenever I could.   Tonight on Twitter, I happened to be lurking on the new  #saGrad chat.  There were some great conversations happening here, and like last year, I knew I wanted to pitch in again and help out if I could.

During the chat, I tweeted to Tina Horvath:

To which she replied:

This was my call to action!  So today, I am asking all my fellow #sachat professionals for help.  If you are interested in being a mentor for a Student Affairs Graduate Student to help with mock interviews, resume and cover letter reviews, negotiation strategies, and/or general mentoring meetings and conversation, please fill in your information here!

If you are an Student Affairs Graduate Student looking for an #sachat professional as a mentor to help with mock interviews, resume and cover letter reviews, and/or mentoring meetings and conversation, then fill in your information here!  I will pair you up based on your answers!

My hope is to make connections between the amazing student affairs professionals and graduate students on Twitter.  Brian LeDuc has done some great work to connect student affairs graduate students together and I would like help out in this small way.

What general advice do you have for Student Affairs Graduate Students? What do you wish you knew when you were a graduate student?

Do you have to currently be a Student Affairs Grad Student? I'm just about to finish my senior year in my undergrad with interest in attending grad school next year for Student Affairs.

Glad to see that pros are interested and grad students are taking advantage of the opportunity to connect. There is so much learning that can take place between these communities!

What about non-twitter based connection. Twitter is so impersonal anyways and my Twitter is work related so I am not sure it is appropriate for others to see my conversations back and forth with an individual looking for advise… seems to open and not conducive to the Grad asking “real” questions.

Great question. I frequently engage with people via publicly viewable tweets, private DM's, GChat, Skype, Phone, Face-to-Face, etc. For me it's about using the tool that fits the need for the conversation. I've found that Twitter can be a great place for crowdsourcing…poll the group and you'll get a lot of answers. Take care.

Sasha, sorry for the delayed response. I agree with Eric and if you are looking for a mentor in a specific Student Affairs area, please let me know and I'll be happy to connect you. Thanks for commenting and reading!

    Dear all,
This is the first time in my life to use blog and it is a fantastic experience. Iam working in the american university in Cairo, Egypt as  a graduate student. It is a great point that has been raised from each one of you. I think the only thing that make us survive and continue in the student affairs is connection. We connect to our students either they are on campus or after graduation. All of you have  alot of duties to connect graduate students in the field to each others. The only problem that i face now and then for along time to find mentor to guide me what to read and research. the field of student affairs is nt exited in the middle east and most people who work in the field are nt experience enough to guide graduate students. Therefore, we are as graduate students do this role.
