Where’s the Excitement?

This past weekend I returned from a trip to San Diego for the annual NACURH, Inc. conference. Folks in residence life may be familiar with NACURH – the National Association of College & University Residence Halls.

Although I’ve been working in residence life for a collective 8 years, both as a student and professional, this was my first-ever trip to a NACURH conference. NACURH is the national organization that many RHAs (Residence Hall Associations) are affiliated with. As the advisor to a National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) on my campus, I was able to attend with a group of my student leaders.

Like most student affairs professionals, I’ve been to my fair share of conferences, ranging from ACPA and APCA to NACA and the national Habitat for Humanity Youth Leadership conference. Yet, somehow this particular conference was a tad bit different. First off, it was run by students for students… that’s the special thing about NACURH. This conference had energy, pizzazz, intensity, and a sense of pride. All of this reminded me of an important lesson that I am guilty of forgetting.

That lesson? Be excited. Be energized. Be proud. Be all of these things in the process of our daily routines.

I was in awe through the duration of the NACURH conference. So much energy. Students standing, chanting, screaming, and applauding their home institutions and regions. Students dancing on the sidewalks, making up cheers and chants, and dressing up in costume. It was wonderful to see so many student leaders from across the country under one roof with so much excitement.

This conference caused me to reflect… What excites me? What energizes me? What am I proud of?

I wrote this blog post to get us all thinking about these three questions. Feel free to share. After all, we need to constantly remind ourselves of why we do what we do. We need to remind ourselves that there are things that excite us, energize us, and make us proud here in the student affairs profession.

Feel the excitement (NACURH 2010)

What excites me? Planning successful events, seeing my students succeed, hearing back from students after they graduate

What energizes me? Impactful one-on-ones with students; weekends with the family, conferences, volunteering in my free time

What makes me proud? I take a lot of pride in the profession I've chosen in general. I'm proud to be a first generation college graduate. I'm proud that I make my parents proud of me.

What excites me? – The potential untapped energy of a student body. Very much like the conference you attended. What happens when we put more of the responsibility into their hands?

What energizes me? – When two students with obscenely unique interests (aka “Chain Mail Making”) find each other, connect around their obscenely unique interest, and do something.

What am I proud of? – Helping open up education to the long tail of engagement with peer-to-peer learning.

Brian – As much as conferences like this one tire me out, they are also invigorating and make me love my job. I work in Orientation. Our national Conference is more geared towards professionals (much like ACUHO-I is for Housing professionals). However, the regional NODA conferences are geared toward students, especially NODA Region VI's conference, also known as SROW. SROW looks very similar to the picture above: constant cheering, themed dressing, and there is even a skit/song/dance competition. I went twice when I was in graduate school at an institution in the southeast, and it was amazing!

It is events like this that show what a great and unique field student affairs really is! I cannot think of many other fields where one can get this incredible, reinvigorating burst of energy and pride. I think going to one of these conferences make a professional realize that this is why they are in the field that they are in….the students. I have not had a chance to go to one of these conferences in my students affairs career but this is something that I definetly want to take advantage of, especially after reading this experience!

Well I'm a little different. I’m not a professional staff member yet but I am hoping on getting a Masters in Student Affairs. I also attend my first NACURH conference this past June. And I just loved that it was ran by students for students who love Residence Life.

What excites me? Just knowing that as a current RA, I am able to change people. My favorite post secret is: “I would not be here today if my RA had not asked me how I was doing at the right moment. They really listened, didn't judge me!”

What energizes me? Seeing students that I known since freshman to get involved in Residence Life.

What makes me proud? I'm proud to be a first generation college student who will be graduating with my degree in only three year, and starting to look for a great job that will allow me to still go to school to earn my Masters.
